• The original French corvette "L'Unité" HAVRE built in 1794 and in force 24 guns of eight books, and was captured by "inconsistent" in English frigate APRIL 1796 at BONA in Algeria and was renamed HMS SURPRISE "and rearmed with 28 guns.

• It made his reputation in October 1799 in Puerto Cabello (Venezuela) through the capture and reporting of the "Hermione" whose crew had mutinied: boats of HMS Surprise, commanded by Captain Edward HAMILTON, se crept into the harbor, came the "Hermione" and set sail.

• It is now well known thanks to the exploits of Captain Jack "Lucky" and related AUDREY romanticized by Patrick O'BRIAN and filmed in "Master and Commander".

• The replica of the HMS Surprise is at the Maritime Museum of San Diego.
