"BLUE NOSE II" (1963) scale: 1/83e : 67cm long Model numbered - delivered with a certificate of authenticity
"Blue Nose II" is a replica of the legendary Canadian schooner "Blue Nose". Launched on July 24, 1963 from the Smith & Rhuland Shipyard in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, she was built from identical plans and by some of the same men that constructed the original. At 161 feet long and displacing 285 tons, she has the largest working mainsail. (4,150 sq t) in the world, and her total sail area measures over 11,000 square feet. Schooners such as "Blue Nose", which launched on March 26, 1921, were working ships essential to the cod fishing industry, but they also competed for the coveted International Fisherman's Trophy. "Blue Nose" held that title for 17 years! As global depression, World War II, and the arrival of diesel powered fishing trawlers forced her sale to the West Indian Trading Company in 1942, she continued to work as a freighter before being wrecked on a reef near Haiti in January of 1946. Though not allowed to race, "Blue Nose II", like her namesake, moves like the wind and serves today as ambassador for both province and country at many international events.
